Why Is an Oil (Kerosene) Leak Detection System Essential for an Island Power Plant?

ย 

Daecheongdo is an island located away from the mainland, so a stable electricity supply is essential for residentsโ€™ daily life. This island self-operated power plant, managed by Korea Electric Power Corporation, uses a large volume of kerosene as fuel for power generation.

  1. Prevention of serious environmental pollution: Oil leakage can cause irreversible contamination of the surrounding marine ecosystem and soil.

  2. Prevention of major fire and explosion accidents: Kerosene is a flammable substance, and even a small leak can lead to a major fire or explosion.

  3. Protection of people and assets: Because of the islandโ€™s remote location, external emergency support may be delayed, making an on-site early detection and response system critically important.


To completely prevent these combined risks of environmental damage, fire, and human injury, and to immediately detect even a small leak of kerosene used as generator fuel, the installation of Yoohantechโ€™s advanced leak detection system was selected for this site.

Project Success Begins with Thorough Site Survey and Consultation

In every Yoohantech project, the most important first step is close consultation with the site personnel who know the facility best.

This was also the case for the Daecheongdo power plant project. Together with the plant site manager, our expert team carefully reviewed the kerosene transfer routes within the facility and the safe movement paths for workers.

This allowed us to determine the following key points:

  1. Selection of optimal installation points: Not only around high-risk locations such as under fuel tanks and piping flanges, but also at predicted low points where even a very small leak would flow and accumulate, allowing us to optimize sensor placement.
  2. Ensuring work safety: We finalized the piping route to maximize detection performance without interfering with workersโ€™ movement paths and safety clearance during maintenance and inspection.

No Response to Water! High-Performance Oil-Only Leak Detector Sensor Applied

ย 

Because the fuel used at the power plant is kerosene, we applied an oil-only detection sensor that does not react to rainwater or ordinary moisture, but responds only to oil components.

  • Technical point: With an oil-resistant design, the sensor is not deformed by oil exposure, and its waterproof / dustproof structure minimizes false alarms even in the harsh coastal power plant environment with sea wind.

Integrated Leak Detection and Monitoring System

This system was built around a leak detection controller (receiver) installed near the power plant control room, providing an integrated monitoring function that processes field-detected signals in real time and delivers them to the operator.

1. Real-Time Monitoring and Leak Location Identification

The controller accurately analyzes detection signals received from multiple sensors, providing an intuitive monitoring interface that helps managers quickly identify the leak location and take immediate action.

2. Immediate Alarm System Integration

When a leak is detected, the system activates warning lights installed throughout the machine room and work areas through controller linkage, generating immediate visual and audible alarms. This emergency alert system enables all personnel to recognize the danger quickly and evacuate even in the noisy environment of a power plant.

3. Power Redundancy for Uninterrupted Monitoring (Supports Hazardous Areas)

Two installation points of the leak detector system were designated as hazardous areas. To ensure uninterrupted monitoring, the controller (receiver) enclosure was equipped internally with a backup battery and a Zener barrier. This redundant power configuration guarantees stable operation of the monitoring system for at least one hour even during an unexpected power outage.

Reusable and Cost-Effective Leak Detection Technology

ย 

Unlike disposable film-type detectors from other suppliers, Yoohantechโ€™s electronic point leak sensor is an eco-friendly and cost-effective product that can be reused by replacing only the core consumable part.

ย 

A key structural feature of this sensor is that the leak-reactive material is concentrated in the floor sensor located at the bottom of the detector. After an actual leak detection event or a performance test, only the floor sensor needs to be replaced easily, while the main body can be reused. This provides excellent maintenance cost savings.

On-Site Performance Verification and User Training

1. Post-Installation On-Site Verification Test

After installation is completed, Yoohantech directly performs an on-site performance verification test in the installed area by simulating a real leakage condition using a liquid with properties similar to kerosene. This process proves that the system operates accurately and reliably in the actual operating environment as designed.

2. Sensor Module Replacement and User Training

After the test, taking advantage of the reusable design, the floor sensor used during the test is immediately replaced with a new one on site. At the same time, practical training is provided to the site manager on how to replace the floor sensor, enabling the user to perform future maintenance quickly and easily.
