Intrinsically Safe Organic Solvent Leak Detection Installation Summary

This project was carried out at an outdoor chemical storage facility handling Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) and Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP). Yoohantech applied the YHSP-SA-Ex Intrinsically Safe Electronic Leak Point Sensor, outdoor receiver, intrinsically safe circuit configuration, and wireless alarm monitoring system to detect actual organic solvent leaks while reducing false alarms caused by rainwater and condensation.

Project Overview

This installation took place at a chemical logistics center in Ulsan, South Korea, where outdoor storage facilities are used to handle chemical materials.

The site stores Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) and Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP). Because chemical leaks can directly affect worker safety and environmental protection, the customer required a reliable leak detection system designed for hazardous chemical storage areas.

Since most of the storage area is located outdoors, the key requirement was clear: the system had to detect actual organic solvent leaks without generating false alarms from rainwater, cleaning water, or condensation.

To meet this requirement, Yoohantech designed a complete leak monitoring system using the YHSP-SA-Ex Intrinsically Safe Electronic Leak Point Sensor, YH-200L Outdoor Receiver, YHSM-04S-A Control Module, MTL7760ac Zener Barrier, and a wireless alarm transmission system.

Product and System Configuration Check

Before installation, the first step was to inspect all delivered equipment and verify the material quantities. The intrinsically safe leak detection sensors, receiver, wireless transmission devices, Zener barrier, and wiring materials were checked one by one against the system design.

A leak detection system is not simply a matter of installing devices. The sensor location, wiring route, hazardous area boundary, and intrinsically safe circuit configuration must match the actual site environment.

Sensor Location Based on Actual Leak Flow

During the site survey, drainage channels and collection pits were identified around the storage tanks. In the event of a chemical leak, spilled liquid is likely to flow along the drainage path or collect at the pit.

Yoohantech engineers checked how chemicals would actually move across the site if a leak occurred. The purpose was not to detect the leak after it had already spread, but to detect it early at the most likely flow points and help prevent a larger incident.

Hazardous Area Conduit Installation

The conduit work performed together with the leak detection system installation was carried out for hazardous area wiring conditions. Steel conduit was used for the wiring route, and sealing fittings were applied to connection and termination points as part of the field safety construction.

In this project, the sensor circuit was configured as an intrinsically safe circuit using a Zener barrier, while the conduit and sealing work helped protect the wiring route in the chemical storage environment.

Leak Detection at Drainage Channels and Collection Pits

The leak detection sensors were installed inside drainage channels and around collection pits. When a chemical leak occurs, the liquid usually moves along drainage paths or accumulates in a pit.

The YHSP-SA-Ex used in this project is an intrinsically safe leak detection sensor designed for organic solvents. It is designed not to react to ordinary water or rainwater, while responding to target organic solvents.

Outdoor Receiver and Intrinsically Safe Circuit Configuration

The receiver was installed inside a stainless steel enclosure located outside the hazardous area. This configuration improves maintenance access while keeping the control equipment safely positioned.

Inside the receiver, an MTL7760ac Zener Barrier was applied for the intrinsically safe circuit configuration, allowing the YHSP-SA-Ex intrinsically safe sensors to operate safely in hazardous area applications. A backup battery was also installed to keep the system operating for at least one hour during a power failure or emergency situation.

Real-Time Alarm Monitoring from the Office

The photos above show the YH-RF500L RX Wireless Integrated Alarm Receiver installed inside the office. When a leak occurs at the outdoor storage facility, the alarm signal is transmitted to the office in real time, enabling faster recognition and response.

The indoor receiver also includes a backup battery, allowing it to continue operating for at least one hour during a power outage or emergency condition.

Organic Solvent Leak Detection Verification Test

After installation, Yoohantech performed an actual operation test using an organic solvent. The sensor and receiver were tested under a simulated leak condition to confirm that the entire system worked as intended.

Once the leak was detected, the receiver generated an alarm normally. The YHSP-SA-Ex leak detection sensor is designed so that only the floor sensor can be replaced after a leak event, helping reduce maintenance time and replacement cost.

Alarm Interlock Test Between Four Outdoor Sensors and Office Receiver

After installation, Yoohantech performed alarm tests on all four outdoor leak detection points. The test confirmed that if a leak occurs at any one of the four outdoor sensors, the alarm is transmitted not only to the outdoor receiver but also to the wireless alarm receiver installed in the office.

Installation Results

Through this installation at the Ulsan chemical logistics center, the customer strengthened the safety management system for outdoor chemical storage facilities.

The system was designed to reflect the actual outdoor environment, chemical flow paths, hazardous area requirements, intrinsically safe circuit configuration, and the need for office-based alarm monitoring.

In chemical leak incidents, early detection is far more important than responding after the leak has already spread. Yoohantech provides optimized leak detection solutions based on the site environment and the characteristics of the chemicals handled.
